About Ikebukuro

Ikebukuro is a shopping and entertainment district in Tokyo’s Toshima ward. Ikebukuro is best known for the huge Sunshine City shopping centre and Toyota’s Interactive showroom known as Toyota Amulux.

Located 600m from Ikebukuro Station, Sunshine city is probably one of the first stops to visit when visiting Ikebukuro, Several attractions are housed in the complex including an aquarium and an observatory on top if the Sunshine 60 building, the second tallest building in Tokyo

Toyota Amlux spans 5 floors making it one is one of the world’s largest car showroooms and is a free must visit when in the area.

Other attractions in the area include the Large Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, The Ikebukuro fire station and the quirky Nekobukuro (8th floor of Tokyu Hands), a shop full of 20 cats you can pay to pat and play with. This attraction makes a bit more sense to the Japanese who often live in apartments not suitable for pets and long to have a bit of pet interaction.

Ikebukuro is home to two private railways, Seibu and Tobu both of which own large department stores above their stations. The Ikebukuro Station is on JR’s Saikyō Line, Shōnan-Shinjuku Line and the Yamanote line and is the second busiest line in Tokyo serving 1 million people each day. The Tokyo Marunouchi and Yūrakucho Subway Lines also stop at Ikebukuro Station.
