Marunouchi

Marunouchi is the main commercial district boarded by the Tokyo station, Imperial Palace and the Tokyo International Forum to the south in Yurakucho. The Marunouchi area is also home to Imperial Theatre and the Tokyo Post Office. The easiest way to get to the area is by one of the many rail lines to Tokyo station or by a short stroll from the popular Ginza area.

Meaning “inside the circle” Marunouchi is essentially that, the centre of Tokyo. The district is home to Tokyo’s main financial district, the Imperial Palace, plenty of cultural centres and some of the city’s most magnificent parks and gardens.

Below is a Map of Marunouchi with the major attractions numbered. You will note the huge Imperial Palace park in the centre of the map with the rail lines to the east of it. This is where Tokyo Station is and it is here where many visitors arrive to Tokyo on the Shinkansen bullet train. Imperial Theater

Tokyo’s Imperial Theater is a theatre located opposite the Imperial Palace’s detached court gardens and the palace complex moat. The Imperial Theater is noted for being the first western style theatre in Japan, the building also incorporates the Idemitsu Museum of Arts.

Imperial Palace Kouko

The Kouko or Imperial Palace is located where the Edo Castle once stood in the 17th to 19th Century. There are quite a few features of the old Edo Castle still to be seen around the present structure, including original gates, moats and some stone walls.

Tokyo International Forum

Opening in 1997, the Tokyo International Forum is a masterpiece in modern engineering and design. With 11 stories above the ground and 3 below, the centre rises 60 metres from the street and housing over 145,000 square metres of floor space. The centre houses an amazing glass and steel atrium which is open to the public. Located in the atrium is a very useful information booth, with a large collection of Tokyo information. The staff on this information desk are very helpful and are quite good with English.

Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station is located in the Marunouchi business district of Tokyo and is the terminus for the Shinkansen bullet train that connects to most major cities. It also has stations for the Narita Express from the Airport and most other local and regional trains.

Located in Kitanomaru Park, just outside the Imperial Palace grounds in the central Tokyo suburb of Marunouchi, is the well known martial arts hall known as Nippon Budokan.
