The Kankō Maru is a historically inspired sailing ship offering scenic cruises around Nagasaki Port, allowing visitors to experience Japan’s maritime heritage firsthand. This replica of the original 19th-century vessel provides an immersive journey through history and the picturesque harbor.
The original Kankō Maru was Japan’s first Western-style steam warship, gifted by the Netherlands to the Tokugawa shogunate in 1855. It served as a training vessel at the Nagasaki Naval Training Center during the late Edo period, marking a significant step in Japan’s modernization efforts. The current replica, constructed based on original design drawings and models, faithfully reproduces the ship’s appearance, using similar materials for the interior and deck to evoke its historical ambiance.
Operated by Yamasa Kaiun, the Kankō Maru offers a 50-minute “Nagasaki Port Heritage Cruise,” departing at 16:00. This cruise provides panoramic views of Nagasaki’s waterfront, including landmarks like Dejima, the Dutch Slope, and the Gunkanjima cruise terminal. Passengers can enjoy the ship’s elegant design and learn about its historical significance through onboard commentary.
The Kankō Maru has also featured in popular media, serving as a filming location for the NHK historical drama “Ryōmaden,” which portrays the life of Sakamoto Ryōma, a key figure in Japan’s transition from feudalism to modernity.
