Tennoji

Tennoji is one of Osaka’s most fascinating neighbourhoods—an area where centuries-old temples, bustling shopping centres, leafy green parks, and retro streets all blend together. Anchored by Tennoji Station, a major hub in the city’s south, it’s an excellent base for sightseeing, shopping, and exploring a more local, laid-back side of Osaka.

At the heart of the district is Tennoji Park, a spacious and beautifully landscaped green space that offers a welcome break from the urban bustle. Within the park, you’ll find Tennoji Zoo, one of Japan’s oldest, and the Osaka City Museum of Fine Art, a respected gallery featuring both Japanese and East Asian works. The park is also dotted with small gardens, walking paths, and rest areas—perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Just south of the station, shopping lovers are spoilt for choice. The towering Abeno Harukas is Japan’s tallest skyscraper and features an observation deck with stunning city views, along with the Kintetsu department store and an art museum. Nearby, Mio Tennoji and Abeno Q’s Mall are home to dozens of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, offering something for every taste and budget.

For a cultural highlight, don’t miss Shitennō-ji Temple, just a short walk north of the station. Founded in the 6th century, it’s considered Japan’s oldest state-sponsored Buddhist temple and is steeped in history and spiritual atmosphere.

Suggested Walk: Tennoji to Shinsekai

Begin your journey at Tennoji Station, and head toward Ten-Shiba, the vibrant entrance area of Tennoji Park. Described as a hub for new ways to enjoy both the park and the city, Ten-Shiba is lined with cafés, restaurants, a play area, and grassy lawns, making it a popular gathering spot for locals and families. It’s a great place to grab a coffee or quick bite before continuing your walk.

From Ten-Shiba, wander deeper into Tennoji Park, where you can stroll past Osaka’s Tennoji Zoo and admire the lush greenery and public art. If time permits, drop into the Osaka City Museum of Fine Art, tucked into a peaceful corner of the park opposite Keitakuen Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden.

Exit the park’s western side and continue towards the Shinsekai area, one of Osaka’s most nostalgic and unique neighbourhoods. Developed in the early 1900s with Paris-inspired city planning and an old-timey feel, it’s now famous for its retro charm, casual dining, and neon-lit atmosphere.

At the heart of Shinsekai stands Tsutenkaku Tower, a beloved Osaka landmark with an observation deck offering panoramic views. Explore the maze of alleyways filled with kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) restaurants, quirky shops, and photo ops galore.

Wrap up your walk by hopping on the Osaka Metro at Ebisucho Station, conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from Tsutenkaku, or retrace your steps if you’re heading back to Tennoji.
