Tennoji Zoo

Established on January 1, 1915, Tennoji Zoo is Japan’s third-oldest zoo, nestled within the expansive Tennoji Park in Osaka. Spanning 11 hectares, the zoo is home to approximately 1,000 animals representing around 170 species. It’s renowned for its commitment to ecological exhibits that replicate natural habitats, offering visitors an immersive experience into the animal kingdom.

Key Attractions and Animal Exhibits
African Savanna Zone: This area simulates the African savanna, featuring species such as lions, giraffes, zebras, and hyenas. The design allows predators and prey to appear as if they share the same space, providing a realistic glimpse into their natural interactions.

  • Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone: Previously home to Asian elephants, this zone is transitioning to accommodate greater one-horned rhinos. It also houses species like the Japanese red fox and various primates. ​
  • Friendship Garden: Opened in April 2022, this interactive area allows visitors to engage with domestic animals, including goats, sheep, and guinea pigs.
  • Nocturnal House: Unique in Japan, this exhibit features nocturnal animals such as the North Island brown kiwi, Egyptian fruit bats, and Japanese raccoon dogs. ​
  • World of Birds: Inaugurated in November 2023, this aviary showcases a diverse range of bird species, including flamingos, cranes, and owls, in environments that mimic their natural habitats. ​
  • Penguin Park & Sea Lion Wharf: Opened in April 2023, this coastal-themed area is home to Humboldt penguins and California sea lions, offering insights into marine life.
  • Bear House: This exhibit features various bear species, including polar bears, spectacled bears, and sun bears, each residing in enclosures designed to reflect their native environments.

Visitor Information:

  • Opening Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Last admission at 4:00 p.m.). On Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays in May and September, the zoo remains open until 6:00 p.m. with last admission at 5:00 p.m.
  • Closed Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a national holiday), and from December 29 to January 1.
  • Admission Fees: Adults: Y500, Elementary and junior high school students: Y200
