Nestled at the southeastern base of Mount Fuji, Gotemba is a scenic city in Shizuoka Prefecture known for its unbeatable views of Japan’s iconic peak and its reputation as a hub for outlet shopping, leisure, and access to the Fuji Five Lakes region.
Gotemba Premium Outlets
One of the biggest drawcards is Gotemba Premium Outlets, one of the largest outlet malls in Japan. With over 200 domestic and international brands, the open-air mall is laid out like a small town, complete with Mt. Fuji views as a backdrop. From luxury labels to sportswear and household goods, it’s a shopping haven—and a great place to find deals.
Views of Mt. Fuji
Gotemba is renowned for its clear, unobstructed views of Mt. Fuji, particularly in winter and early spring. On good weather days, you’ll find excellent photo opportunities not just from the outlet mall, but also from nearby parks and highway rest stops.
Access and Transportation
Gotemba Station is on the JR Gotemba Line, with easy bus connections to Hakone, the Fuji Five Lakes, and Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station. Direct highway buses run to and from Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama, making it a great day trip or overnight stop.
Fuji Safari Park and Grinpa
Families may want to check out the nearby Fuji Safari Park, where you can drive or ride through an open-range zoo. There’s also Grinpa, a quirky amusement park on the slopes of Mt. Fuji with seasonal flower fields and kids’ attractions.
Onsen and Stays
While not as famous for hot springs as Hakone, Gotemba does offer a few onsen hotels and bathhouses—some with views of Fuji from the outdoor baths. It’s a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing or shopping.
